Augusta Rowing Club hosts Spring Training

Florida has the “grapefruit league” for professional baseball spring training. Augusta has the Savannah River for high school and collegiate rowers. More than a dozen teams and over 400 rowers, coaches and family members visit Augusta in the months of January, February and March as the teams get in their early-season training.

The Augusta Sports Council and the Augusta Rowing Club have worked closely to develop the area as a prime destination for rowing. According to Sports Council executive director Tammy Stout, the large number of teams visiting the area generates serious economic activity. “The economic impact of the rower’s spring training will be several hundred thousand dollars. We are certainly glad they chose Augusta for their training.”
